Tron: Ares (2025)
I worked with Gmunk’s team on VFX and HUD/UI design and animation for Tron: Ares. Over seven months, we developed the most detailed, high-tech UI workflows I’ve ever been a part of. The design direction was rooted in the idea that the interface used by the film’s protagonist, Ares, should represent the highest degree of technical detail and advanced engineering in the world. Our team pulled out all the tricks to create a design system that breathed and morphed as the tech in the film progressed.
Our "North Star" for the design was the Grid—everything the HUD touched was converted into data, visualized as squares of varying size and complexity. This system was developed by Ryan Cashman in Houdini; I then took his passes into After Effects to composite and map the layers of information directly onto the plates.
On top of that data layer, we integrated UI graphics created in Figma by Jayse Hansen. I worked alongside Darby Faccinto to animate these readouts in After Effects, emphasizing the scanning moments and tactical information seen throughout the film.
